Teeling Whiskey Wonders of Wood Series: World’s Best Irish Single Pot Still!

At Teeling Whiskey we believe in driving the evolution of Irish Whiskey through the creation of unconventional and unique expressions. Our Wonders of Wood series is part of this innovative mission in pushing the boundaries of flavour, with Irish Single Pot Still Whiskey done differently by using unique styles of wood for maturation. We have released three editions of the Wonders of Wood Series to date, and each edition is a limited bottling of Irish whiskey, perfect for the budding whiskey enthusiast and connoisseur alike!

Wood plays a crucial role as we know in whiskey maturation, significantly influencing the flavour, aroma, colour, and even the overall character of the final product. At Teeling Whiskey we pride ourselves on the hundreds of casks we use to source new and exciting flavours, and the Wonders of Wood Series marks an exciting new chapter in our Dublin Distilled Whiskeys, as the first new distillery in Dublin in 125 years!

Wonders of Wood 1 : Chinkapin Oak

Teeling Wonders of Wood 1 wirth WWA award for World's Best Single Pot Still 2022

The first edition of the Teeling Wonders of Wood Series set the stage for the quality and innovation of this award-winning series, being crowned the top honour of the “World’s Best Single Pot Still” at the World Whiskey Awards 2022. This limited edition Irish Single Pot Still crafted with our signature recipe of 50% malted barley and 50% unmalted barley, was triple distilled in our Dublin distillery and full matured in Virgin Chinkapin American White Oak casks.

Chinkapin Oak is native to Eastern and Central North America, with a wide grain and is similar to chestnut oak. When used for the maturation of Irish Whiskey, it produces a truly different taste experience with notes of gingerbread spice, banana cake sweetness and mild oak shavings, as well as salted caramel.

Wonders of Wood 2 : Portuguese Oak

The second edition of the WOW bottlings consists of our same mash bill of Single Pot Still crafted from a recipe of 50% malted barley and 50% un-malted barley, which has been triple distilled in the Teeling Whiskey Distillery in Dublin and then matured in Virgin Portuguese oak barrels. Portuguese oak is native to the Iberian Peninsula and has a higher tannin content than other oak variants normally used in the Whiskey industry. When used for maturation it produces a distinct savoury marmalade flavour with warming hints of tobacco and pepper unique to Irish whiskey! Available to purchase here.

Wonders in Sustainability

Teeling Whiskey has always taken great pride in giving back to its local communities. As part of this mission, each bottle of Wonders of Wood purchased will facilitate us to work with the Tree Council of Ireland in the reforestation of a designated area of woodland with exclusively native Irish trees. The first release allowed for an acre of native oak trees to be planted in the Glencree region of County Wicklow just outside of Dublin. The second release saw a second acre planted in County Dublin, again in partnership with the Tree Council of Ireland. Now with the third release, we will plant another significant acre of native Irish trees in Ireland.

Jack Teeling, Founder and Managing Director of Teeling Whiskey commented on the Wonders of Wood Series, “Wood is an amazing, sustainable and environmentally friendly material that plays a huge role in developing the flavour and character of a whiskey as it matures. We are truly in wonder of the role wood has in crafting our Teeling Whiskeys as well as its impact on the wider environment, so as part of our new series we wanted to do our part in helping the replanting of our native Irish forests.

Single Pot Still is uniquely Irish and is perhaps the fastest growing style of Irish whiskey in the world. Teeling Whiskey is very proud to be at the forefront of expanding the offering within this unique category of Irish whiskey and helping it evolve through world class releases such as our Wonders of Wood series.”
