EARTH DAY: How Teeling Whiskey Distillery is looking after the planet while making award-winning whiskey

Earth Day takes place on April 22nd each year, and focuses on natural processes, emerging green technologies, and innovative thinking that can restore the world’s ecosystems. Here at the Teeling Whiskey Distillery, we are constantly looking to implement innovative processes to produce world class whiskeys and, at the same time, protect our planet. Read more about how we’re helping below and learn more about how you can support our planet this Earth Day here.

Since our opening in 2015, sustainability has been at the heart of our philosophy across all of our operations. Winning Sustainable Distillery of the Year at the Icons of Whiskeys awards, 2022, we strive to further our sustainability efforts through our production processes & practices.

Our Dublin Distilled Wonders of Wood Single Pot Still series picked up World’s Best Single Pot Still at the World Whiskies Awards, 2022. This whiskey is packed with flavour but also works towards the reforestation of Ireland. With the second release in the Wonders of Wood series, and working in collaboration with the Tree Council of Ireland, we are proud to have helped plant two acres of native Irish tree’s in the Glencree area of Co. Wicklow. Find our more below:

Our bottles of whiskey are made of 75% recycled glass and are 100% recyclable. Working closely with our bottle suppliers, they have developed the latest innovation, the Denox System, which is among the first to be installed in Italy and has allowed them to reduce NOX emissions to 40% less required by European legislation. Other initiatives include the installation of a Teeling Garnish Garden on the roof of our distillery which supplies us with the necessary ingredients for our cocktails while also providing fuel for the 500,000 bees that live on the rooftop of our distillery supplying us with Teeling Rooftop Honey.

We source sustainable raw materials and implement sustainable production processes whenever possible. Initiatives to date include the installation of a rainwater harvesting system in our distillery; the use of an onsite well to reduce water consumption; and energy optimisation measures such as the harnessing of excess energy produced during the production process to heat our visitor centre. Most recently, we have installed solar panels on the roofs of our distillery. The energy generated will provide the building with up to 30% of its overall electricty requirements, thus reducing our reliance on conventional fossil fuels.

Working in collaboration with industry partners, such as the City Bin Company, we look to further reduce our distillery waste from our visitor centre, by embracing local projects that champion innovation in waste management.

We are very proud to be a verified Origin Green  member. This pioneering programme remains the world’s only national food and drink sustainability programme that drives sustainability improvements across the entire supply chain on a national level. Wherever possible, we work with fellow Origin Green members. For example, we source our malted barley from Minch Malt (Boortmalt Ireland) and our un-malted barley comes from Glanbia who are both Origin Green certified. Commenting on our sustainability measures, Jack Teeling, Managing Director says:

“As a local, craft producer, environmental sustainability is at the heart of our business model and expansion strategy. We are very honoured to be awarded Ireland’s most sustainable distillery along with being a member of the Irish Food Board Origin Green programme which involves us committing to a continual improvement process in terms of sustainability. Ireland has a well-deserved reputation as a country with a high quality environment in an era of ever intensifying environmental threats. We take our inspiration from this well-deserved reputation and endeavour to approach sustainability with this in mind. Through initiatives such as the planting of native Irish tree species in association with the Tree council of Ireland and the use of recycled glass for our bottles, we look to bring a positive impact to the planet that we live in”

We are proud to be celebrating Earth Day today and actively supporting our planet every day. Learn more about Earth Day and how you can help support our planet here.
