Jack Teeling, Founder and Managing Director of Teeling Whiskey, commented;
“Our journey of innovation and desire to push the boundaries of Irish Whiskey continues with our new Dublin Distilled Crystal Single Malt release. Adding crystallised malted barley to the original mash bill coupled with unique cask maturation, crafts another distinctive and different Teeling Whiskey and Irish Single Malt. This release embodies our commitment to innovation and quality, and we are proud to be able to showcase the best of Dublin and Irish Whiskey craftsmanship.”
Whiskey Meets Beer: What is Crystal Malted Barley?
So it’s essentially another type of Malted Barley! We all know Single Malt, and this is in essence, a variation of our award-winning Single Malt Whiskey. However, for this whiskey we are using a new seldom-used extra ingredient! Although highly common in the brewing industry, Crystal Malted Barley is rarely used to produce Irish Whiskey, due to the lower amount of fermentable enzymes. At Teeling Whiskey our Master Distiller Master Blender Alex Chasko took inspiration from his time in the brewing industry, to experiment with Crystal Malted Barley for this new exciting release!
So how is it made? What is Crystal Malt? Well, Crystal Malt undergoes a special malting process where the barley grains are kilned at higher temperatures. These are in a closed system that prevents the moisture from escaping, leading to caramelisation or higher maillard reactions. As a result, this can lead to more rich, sweet flavours, as well as notes of dried fruits. Furthermore, this process creates a range of colour intensities in the wash. From light amber to deep red hues, this adds visual appeal to the final product. In whiskey, Crystal Malt contributes to the depth of flavour, offering hints of toffee, caramel, and dried fruit notes. Similarly, in beer, it provides sweetness, body, and a distinctive malt character, enhancing the overall drinking experience.
Dublin Distilled Single Malts
Did you know that our core award-winning Single Malt at Teeling also uses a proportion of this rare and high flavour grain called Crystal Malt? This had a major part to play in the creation of our new Teeling Crystal Single Malt. It is something we have been working on behind the scenes for many years, as we transition from our Teeling Family Reserve stocks to now our very our Dublin Distilled Single Malts! To date we have produced many styles of Single Malt in our Dublin Distillery. From classic Single Malt, and Peated Single Malt to now even Crystal Single Malts!
